Spinel has a long history as a precious gem. Until modern science developed the ability to truly discern the composition of gems, red spinel was considered to be ruby and blue spinel was considered to be sapphire, as sapphires, rubies, and spinels are all found in similar mining areas and all have relatively similar coloring! Here we've set a pretty purple spinel with a lilac hue into a vintage mounting with a classic profile.
An interesting side note? Gems found in the crown jewels of England and several other countries, long thought to be fine rubies, are actually spinel!
